Moving to Port Elizabeth in 1972, he joined Much Asphalt in the laboratory, progressing to branch manager and then to area manager, based in East London, with three asphalt operations under his control.
An 18 month stint with Blasting & Excavating gave John insight into the complexities of producing aggregates, before returning to Much Asphalt Port Elizabeth in 1984 as branch manager.
In 1987, John transferred to Cape Town to set up the Central Laboratory, and to develop the group's Quality Management System.
This was followed by regional operational responsibility for what became known as Colas South, and included asphalt and emulsion factories.
John was then appointed as asphalt operations manager for the Western Cape and Mobile division and controlled asphalt plants in the West Cape, Bloemfontein, Botswana and Namibia.
With his experience in concrete, asphalt, aggregate, bitumen, quality systems, business and contracting, John finished his career with Much Asphalt in February 2014, his last position being the Group Marketing Director.
In March 2014, John started his own practice as a specialist asphalt practitioner.
He lives in Cape Town, is married with four children and two grand-children.
